From sea to story, from fear to freedom
From Shackle to Liberty is more than a chronicle of escape—it is a voice rising from the silence of exile, a tribute to the countless souls who risked everything to choose freedom over fear, dignity over despair.
This volume, Part One: The Escape and Life in the Refugee Camp, is the first half of a two-part journey. Within these pages, I recount the moment I left my homeland—where roots ran deep but hope had withered—and stepped into the unknown. It tells of fragile boats on vast oceans, of hearts tested by hunger and storms, and of strangers in foreign lands learning, slowly and painfully, to become a community amid uncertainty.
Yet this is not the end.
Part Two: A New Beginning will follow. It will tell the second half of this journey—the arrival in America, a land as promising as it was unfamiliar. It will speak of hardship and resilience, of quiet victories earned through perseverance, and of rebuilding a life from nothing. It is the story of an immigrant’s spirit—wounded, yet unbroken—rising once more to give, to grow, and to belong.
This story is mine, but its echoes live in the hearts of many. May it remind us that freedom is never free—and that those who seek it often carry within them the very strength that enriches the soul of a nation.
